Fear

I don't usually experience fear (unless I see a spider, but I'm really trying to work on that. It's not going very far though...) unless I'm super tired and I haven't gotten half decent sleep in several nights. Well, last night was one of those nights. Just thing after thing I think about has some terrible ending or just something horrible about it. To calm myself down I pray and read my Bible. I don't start in my Bible with any particular passage, although, I usually start reading Psalm. To me, they are so comforting and encouraging. Last night I flipped to Psalm and found myself reading Psalm 139-Psalm142. These are some verses that I felt were very comforting.

Psalms 139:8
If I ascend up into heaven thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

139:11-12
If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

Psalm 140:12
I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.

Psalm 142:5-6
I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.
Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I.

This all reminded me of one of my favorite stories.

Footsteps in the Sand

One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking along
the beach with the Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene, he noticed
two sets of footprints in the sand,
one beloning to him and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him,
he looked back at the footprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times along the path of his life
there was only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it happened at the
very lowest and saddest times in his life.
This bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
you'd walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during the most
troublesome times in my life there is
only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why when I needed you most
you would leave me."
The Lord replied "My precious, precious child,
I love you and would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffereing,
when you see only one set of footprints in the sand,
it was then that I carried you."
