Old Fashioned Crumb Cake

1-1/2 cups sugar
1 cup softened butter
3 cups all-purpose flour
1-1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 eggs
1-1/2 cups buttermilk
(To make buttermilk add 2 Tbs. vinegar for each cup of milk. For this recipe put 3 Tbs vinegar in a measuring glass and add enough milk to make 1-1/2 cups.)

Cream the butter and sugar together in a large bowl. Add the flour and blend together. Take out one cup of the sugar mixture and set aside. To the rest of the sugar mixture, add the baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Mix together. In a small bowl, beat the egg until foamy. Add the buttermilk to the egg and mix. Add the liquid ingredients to the sugar mixture. Mix until combined. Spread the batter into a greased 9x13-inch glass pan. Sprinkle the set aside sugar mixture evenly across the top of the batter. Bake at 350 F. for 40-50 minutes. Stick a toothpick in at 40 minutes to check for doneness. The toothpick should come out clean.
